Access

The entrance of COMATSA Sud is accessible by road, but a four-wheel drive vehicle is needed during rains, particularly the period from December to April. From Andapa, take the road that crosses the Andapa Basin and to the village of Ambodiangezoka, where guides and porters can be engaged. It is best to make all arrangements to enter the site at the manager’s office in Andapa.

Overview
The vegetation of COMATSA Sud has not been studied beyond a recent assessment of the forest’s carbon stock, so this summary has been based exclusively on satellite imagery. The protected area is situated in the Northern Highlands, on the ridge that separates the watersheds feeding the Indian Ocean and the Mozambique Channel; it includes this protected area, which was formerly referred to as the Betaolana corridor, that connects the better-known areas of Marojejy (site 19) and Anjanaharibe-Sud (site 22). Because of the direction of trade winds (varatraza in Malagasy), the western slopes likely receive less rainfall than the eastern slopes (clearly visible by the cloud cover on the satellite imagery) and have a dry season of 2 to 4 months. The eastern part of the site is contiguous with the Andapa basin to the south and the Doany basin to the north, two densely populated regions of intensive agriculture. The western part of the site adjoins the Ankaizina region, which produces large amounts of irrigated rice.
